Hydraulic Fracturing: From Petals to Pancakes

June 8, 2021

For this Office Hours virtual presentation, we have a talk from Dr. Egor Dontsov entitled “Hydraulic Fractures: From Petals to Pancakes”. This talk sheds the light on the possible variability of qualitative behavior of multiple planar hydraulic fractures within a stage. A peculiar feature is observed whereby the stress interaction between the fractures can generate fracture complexity even in homogeneous formations. In such cases, the fractures compete for the available space and develop petal-like geometries that minimize the total overlap between the fracture wings. In contrast, for some other problem parameters, the fractures have regular shapes and resemble pancakes. Parameters and physical mechanisms leading to one or another behavior are discussed and the implication to history matching is presented.
